Didn't wake up quite as early this morning but was still just as excited to rejoin the classroom AND very importantly I had my inside shoes on board. I was prepped.
Rejoined the little class from yesterday- still only a dozen plus children but a different mix today as there were some away and some new faces who appeared after their absence yesterday. Felt very "trusted" when @Ms_W set me up with students who misses yesterday's goal setting so I could "redo" her intro and get the kids thinking, sharing and writing. Reading, art, writing, music. being kind .. had all those down pat on our little shared brainstorming summary. Did cause a few frowns with my recording of the word "maths" - apparently, the subject is "math" here. Amazing what an extra "s" does to a child's ability to focus. A major distraction.
Honestly, I had a couple of little stumbles today - one little friend was showing me his fabulous hand drawn math (I've got it now) activity. I was quick to engage with him talking about his "rainbow facts" - he didn't have a clue what I was talking about - apparently, "friends of ten" here.
Friends of ten - I'll be ready next time
Another poor little dear went to great lengths to help me understand that her gums were sore from chewing her crusts and she couldn't eat anymore and then asked, "Can I go to the fridge please?" That one drew a blank from me. No idea. Apparently, there is a fridge in the hall stocked by the community for lunch "backups." And interestingly, no tuckshop here.
Revisited my little sight words group, helped with some "finishing" work, joined in the dance and song movement session and then was given a group for MATH at the "rainbow table."
Yep, this was the "rainbow table" - but my group looked NOTHING like thin in action
Hmmmm. I failed. It reminded me of the time in Kindy when I had a dozen kids and a parachute to play a game. I just couldn't get them all together under that parachute at fhe one time- it was like herding cats.
That best describes my efforts today. Herding cats. Had six children in the group and four BIG boxes of colourful manipulatives. Big mistake. Bad combination. Definitely seemed simple enough - patterning. Not quite the reality. Children didn't have a grasp of the task - there were too many choices on the table and their focus was on making swords of unifix blocks and necklaces with the links. I called it a loss and trapped two children and focussed on the patterning with them and let the other four "create" their own activity. Confessing I have lost a little sleep over it thinking about "next time." I have some strategies and I did let @Ms_W know group was a bit big for me ... and way too much equipment for round one of the concept! Let's hope I get another "turn." I know I will be better! Well, I couldn't be any worse that's for sure.
Only a half day for the kids again - day two of student led conferences so I made my way back to the library. Definitely building trust after just one day I think. Yesterday, I got to shelve just the picture books and home readers. Today, the graphic novels and the fiction run were added to my roster. The librarian said she didn't want to have me get "confused" with the non-fiction. Little does she know!
Easy peasy on the bus home and @Mac met me at the bus stop for coffee at the #Alpine Cafe for a debrief.
Had a great dinner last night - we enjoyed the benefit of @Mindy and @Ian's #Italian cooking classes. They made a super pasta for dinner!
Rounded out the evening with late night catch ups with @Aunty Gail (trying to solve tech problems for us at home) and @Mrs McPhee who is rounding up her holiday in the #Middle East (surprise, surprise, #Israel cut from the itinerary.)
Still checking the mail box. Still no sign of our voting papers. Timeline getting very tight.
